In honor of International Women’s Day, I wanted to step away from the spreadsheets and focus on the soul of leadership. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to sit at tables with incredible women who have redefined what it means to “boss up.”

Here are the five biggest lessons I’ve carried with me:

  1. Boundaries are a Form of Respect: Leading doesn’t mean being available 24/7.
  2. Empathy is a Superpower: Hard data is important, but understanding the human behind the computer screen is what builds a brand that lasts.
  3. Ask for the Seat: If there isn’t a spot at the table, bring a folding chair.
  4. Collaboration over Competition: There is enough room for everyone to win.
  5. Fail Forward: Every “no” is just a redirection toward a better “yes.”
