Why deal with the stress of LAX, the terminal 4 shuffle, or the 101 traffic when we live in literal paradise? This March, we’re leaning into the “Hometown Tourist” lifestyle. There’s something so satisfying about exploring your own backyard and realizing that people fly from across the country to see what you have within a 15-minute drive. You don’t need a passport to find a hidden waterfall or see a whale breach, you just need a solid 48-hour plan.
Day 1: Green Hills & Local Hops
Start your Saturday at Wildwood Park (928 W Avenida de los Arboles, Thousand Oaks). Thanks to our 2026 winter rains, the hills are currently a neon shade of green that looks like a Windows screensaver. Take the hike down to Paradise Falls. It’s about a 2-mile round trip and relatively easy, making it perfect for a morning reset.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head toward the coast to Bright Spark Brewing at 4561 Market St, Ventura, CA 93003. This isn’t your average brewery. Owned by a chemical engineer and a food magazine publisher, the vibes here are smart and cozy. They specialize in “South Shore” bar-style pizza (thin, crispy, and addictive) and craft beers brewed right on-site. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of their musical bingo nights on the patio.
Day 2: Channel Islands & Harbor Vibes
Sunday is for the water. March is peak Gray Whale migration season in the Santa Barbara Channel. Head over to Island Packers (1691 Spinnaker Dr, Ventura) for a 3.5-hour winter whale watch cruise. These waters were recently named a Whale Heritage Area, meaning they are one of the best places on the planet to see these giants in the wild.
After the boat docks, don’t just rush to your car. Walk through the Ventura Harbor Village. Grab a “pup cup” for the dog or some locally made ice cream and just watch the boats come in. It’s the kind of slow-paced Sunday that makes you remember why you chose to live in the 805 in the first place.
Since the 805 is basically an endless playground, here are a few more “Hometown Tourist” spots to swap into your 48-hour plan. These keep that same mix of fresh air, local flavor, and easy vibes.
